Well, I finally made it to double digits…number 10. This is my friend’s daughter, Chloe and I drew her using mostly pastel with a few lines and the eyes done in colored pencil. The original reference photo had a range of values from dark to light. As her face darkened on the side of the cheek, the ear and hairline faded into black, so I had to use a lot more colors on her skin than I have used lately. Once I made the side of the face black I realized that I had to pull the black down on her shirt to ground it. One thing that is important to point out is that I did not use a flat black there, instead I layered a navy blue, then black and then a warm chocolate-brown on top. Never use just black!
